I hand-sculpt wool sauna hats, so I think about what makes a good one more than most people do. Here is the checklist I would use if I were buying one.

Wool. In a sauna, your head sits in the hottest air in the room, and a hat sits close to your skin. Some sauna hats are made from polyester felt, lined with synthetic fabric, or held together with glue. A hat that is wool all the way through has no hidden layers and no adhesives. What touches your head is the same material from the outside to the inside.

How dense should a sauna hat be?
Dense. Dense felt holds its shape, stays comfortable when it gets wet, and sits between your head and the hot air, so direct heat stays off your hair. A thin hat gives you little, and a floppy one won't stay on. Press the fabric: it should feel firm and springy, not loose.
What is a seamless sauna hat, and why does it matter?
A seamless hat is solid: one continuous piece of felted wool, with no stitching, thread or glue holding separate panels together. Even the hanging loop is sculpted into the hat this way, as part of the same piece of wool, not sewn or attached on afterward. Mine is hand-sculpted this way: wool fiber locked into a single form through wet felting, not cut and sewn from flat pieces.
It matters where the hat actually touches your skin and hair. A seam is a ridge or a stitched line, and on a hat that sits close to your hairline and scalp in the heat, that's exactly where you'd feel it. A seamless hat has nothing pressing or catching there, only wool.
It also matters for how long the hat lasts. Stitching can come loose with repeated heat and wet use, and glue can soften or fail. A seamless hat has nothing to come apart, so the comfort it gives you on day one is still there after a season of sauna and cold plunge.
How tall should a sauna hat be?
Tall enough for space above your head. Heat gathers high in a sauna, and your head takes it first. A tall hat rests on you lightly, with dense wool around you and space above you. My standard hat stands about 15 in (38 cm) tall, and I make it that way on purpose. The height also leaves room for long hair.

What does the brim do?
A generous brim does two jobs. Folded down, it shades your eyes and ears from direct heat. Folded up, the hat sits higher and lighter. I sculpt the brim long, so you can fold it to what you need, or trim the edge to your length. The wool does not fray.

What size sauna hat do you need?
Head sizes vary, and a hat that only fits one shape is a poor choice. Look for generous length, so you can fold the brim, wear it long, or trim the edge. Wool molds gently to your head with wear. My hats are one size, unisex, and suit almost all adult heads (22–24.4 in, or 56–62 cm, around the head).

Does a sauna hat protect your hair?
Many people wear one to keep direct heat off their hair. Dry heat can leave hair feeling dry, and colored hair and split ends are what people worry about most. A hat sits between your hair and the hot air, and dense wool is breathable, so it stays comfortable as you sweat.
It is a comfort measure, not a treatment. It does not stop steam or sweat from reaching your hair, and I can't promise it prevents fading or damage, so keep up the care your hair needs. A tall hat has room for long hair, tucked under the brim.
Should you choose an undyed sauna hat?
Yes, and it matters. Undyed wool has only what the sheep grew: no dye, no dye baths, no bleaching, no chemical softeners and no fixing agents. Its color is the fleece's own, in seven natural shades, from white through beige and gray to chocolate and black. The wool is washed with water only, so what touches your head is wool as the sheep grew it. Choosing undyed means one fewer thing to wonder about.

Where should the wool come from?
I use undyed, carded Alpine mountain wool from Tyrol, from small European farms that do not practise mulesing. The wool is washed with water only and never dyed. The trace of meadow proves it: washed and carded, nothing more. Undyed, exactly as the sheep grew it. I could take it out. I'd rather not.
Whose wool is it?
The wool comes from Tyrolean Mountain and Stone sheep, who spend their summers on alpine meadows up to 3,000 m high in the Austrian Alps. They're shorn twice a year, in spring and autumn. Beyond their wool, these sheep have a real ecological role: as landscape keepers, they graze the alpine valleys of Tyrol and help preserve that land. Their wool is short-fibred, about 30–32 micron, in white, brown, natural black, and mixed shades.

Do you need a sauna hat in an infrared sauna, steam room or cold plunge?
After training, after a hard week, after a long day: the sauna is where many people end up. In every sauna, and in every heat or cold therapy, you can wear a wool sauna hat. It is a matter of comfort, and it is optional, but here is what it does for you in each one.

Wool stays comfortable when it is wet, and a dense wool hat keeps a little warmth around your head between rounds, so you don't need a second hat for the plunge. Look for a hat that holds its shape after it has been wet: rinse it with cool water, then hang it by its loop or air dry it flat.
A hat adds comfort. It does not make a cold plunge safer, so follow your own limits and get out when you feel unwell.

How do you care for a wool sauna hat?
A sauna hat gets wet, so it needs simple care. Wool can absorb a large amount of water without becoming cold, unlike synthetic felt, which is why the same hat works from the sauna to the cold plunge. Wool is also naturally resistant to odor: its fiber structure and lanolin content make it harder for bacteria to take hold, so it stays fresher between washes than synthetic felt. Rinse it with cool water and air dry it flat. Avoid hot water and machine washing, which can felt the wool further and shrink it.
